The second birthday is coming with funny exercises – milestone charts from 21.-24. months
Now, when the second birthday is just around the corner, in front of your toddler are real challenges. The exercises for this period are coming after those from the previous period, so some of them are repeating. If at the beginning of this developmental period toddler can’t achieve all that proposed, you will have enough time to exercise.
Remember that every child follows his/her own pace and that it is important to support their diversity, but that the milestone charts are framework indicators of expected progress. If your toddler in any field lags behind peers, (if with 24 months (s)he is not able to to carry out the tasks provided for ages up to 18 months), do not hesitate to seek advice from experts. In any case, mention it to the pediatrician at the next check up.
Exercises for development of motor skills
From earlier period, we still practice movement up and down stairs, kicking balls of different sizes, as well as crawling through a tunnel or under chairs that we lined up in a series.
What we are new to are ball exercises.
We are learning our child to throw the ball with both hands. If you are very enthusiastic you can try to very slowly throw soft balls to the toddler in hopes that (s)he will attempt to catch it. With little luck, you may succeed in doing so.
Then there is the game of rolling the ball with one hand. Sit together down on the floor with your legs spread and roll the ball toward one another, using only one hand. Try to play one day using left, and another using right hand.
Do you recall that we talked about chairs? A favorite activity of children (and parent’s headache) is climbing on a chair. If your toddler is succeeding in so – congratulations! I know it’s hard to be on duty at all times to prevent a fall, but it is an important step in toddlers developmental progress.
Games for enhancing coordination
Do you know what is the most beautiful in the period ahead? That your toddler is more conscious of and more co-operative, so exercises are becoming more and more fun!
During this period, we continue playing with cubes, making a tower of 6 floors (and it’s okay if it looks like the Leaning Tower of Pisa), we practice recognizing and correctly classifying the three forms, but this time we introduce big and small – big or small circle, triangle, and a square.
Also, we learn to classify various small items, putting on different sides chips and little sticks. If you do not have purchasable packages of chips and little sticks, you can use the buttons and straws as a replacement.
A particular novelty is that we learn to use buttons, specifically a stick in order to reach the items which are not at your fingertips. Usually, we play this game outside, and the easiest way is to practice it is near the rain puddles. Since the autumn is coming, this is an excellent opportunity to put on toddler’s rubber boots and go outside. Then try to use a stick to get a paper boat (or just a leaf) from the puddle. To make it even more interest, you may tell try stories about animals, like the story about the raven. It is one of the most intelligent birds on the world. Did you know that raven is able to use a stick? Even more, it knows to make some sort of hook! It puts one side of wire in the beak, and strongly hit another into a rock (or a wall), and that’s how it makes hook!
Children of this age are very curious, so you can take advantage of this. Show toddler what the raven looks like- whether it be in nature or just a picture in a book.
Exercises for speech development
Speech development is a particularly sensitive topic. In recent years, more and more children are not speaking until their second year of age. This is a big gap in anticipation for a speech therapist, as well as the number of children who are not able to fill it.
No matter how many times you hear it, if your child doesn’t use a single verb in his vocabulary until the second years, consult an expert. It’s probably not a big deal, but toddler expert will, if necessary, carry out the necessary tests.
From exercises we encourage the use of ” related speech,” and expected our toddler to use extended sentences (noun + verb + adjective) and use some pronouns (like the possessive pronouns), like their soon to be favorite – My!
Exercises for a better socialization of toddler
It would be desirable to encourage the independence of your toddler. Not only independence in eating, but also independence in drinking from a glass. If you haven’t said “Goodbye” to a bottle, it is high time to do so! You don’t want to cause a deformity of toddler’s jaw, right?
In addition, it is necessary to allow a child to participate in undressing and dressing, and putting his/her shoes on, then washing hands …
Although we need much more time when toddlers are involved, try to be patient! When our toddlers are faced with a new skill, let them attempt it alone while trying your best not to do it for them.
And remember, growing up can be very exhausting, but that’s not the reason to forget to enjoy each other!
