Atopic dermatitis in toddlers – difficulty for the whole family
Atopic dermatitis is the most widespread illnesses in childhood, immediately after dental caries. Atopic dermatitis affects every third child up to three years, but the percentage of patients decreases with time.
It occurs most often in early childhood, namely the first few months, and sometimes after leaving the hospital. How is breastfeeding the best and the healthiest option for your baby, exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months is very important, but despite it eczema may occur.
What is atopic dermatitis
Atopic dermatitis is a chronic immunological disorder that affects persons of the atopic structure. As a result, it is often associated with other diseases in this family such as asthma, allergic rhinitis, and food allergies. But from everything I’ve written you can hardly imagine what it is.
Atopic dermatitis from the perspective of child and mom
Eczema (atopic dermatits) is the area of extremely dry and damaged skin. In addition, the skin affected with eczema terribly itches. Constant scratching doesn’t provide relief, but the pain prevents a child to itch wounds that bleed. Even for toddlers ready for cooperation, with the shortest nails, constant itching caused anxiety, interferes with sleep, and even normal socialization. And that is in the best case. Just a moment of inattention is enough that a child becomes ill from secondary infections such as Staphylococcus aureus and herpes viruses.
The atopic dermatitis is persistent and long-lasting. Doctors are not sure what causes the disease but are known “triggers” that lead to deterioration. Family history is very important because children whose parents are atopic individuals have a 60% greater chance of getting eczema. The therapy is symptomatic and is reduced to relieve symptoms.
A constant change of periods without symptoms with periods of worsening will force you to constantly be careful. Besides, it will make you feel powerless and frustrated.
In the acute phase, skin is inflamed, painful and followed by a terrible itching. Scratching makes injury on extremely sensitive skin that slowly healing and thus rotate you in a vicious circle.
For some types of eczema, summer, sun and sea water bring relief. With proper care and nutrition of the skin, summer can be a long-term peaceful period in which the child begins to sleep normally. Yes, the sleep disorder is still one of the consequences of this disease.
A child without enough of sleep becomes exhausted and hypersensitive while stress further aggravates eczema.
Welcome to a vicious circle, again!
But, as I wrote, numerous patients during the summer feel relief.
For others, torment is just beginning. Heat, the sun, sweat, air-conditioned room or insects- too many threats for toddlers. High temperatures during the summer create nervousness and for the adults, healthy people, not just for kids. Otherwise, it was observed that children react more intensely to the weather and that among them is a large number meteoropathy. Heat leads to sweating, which prickling the skin and creates a feeling of discomfort. The showering is recommended only once a day, and then you should use oil baths.
If you are thinking that the child refresh with air conditioners, wait a moment. Patients with atopic dermatitis are not recommended staying in air-conditioned rooms. The list of what is prohibited and what is not recommended is long. But…
Here are some tips for painlessly survival during the hottest days.
Would you like ice cream?
Before you wonder if I’m crazy to forgot that the use of industrially processed food is unwanted, I must tell you that my children have atopic dermatitis and that this ice cream is perfect for them. For its preparation, you will need a banana. Yes, just a banana. Peel the banana and cut into slices. Then freeze it for a few hours, remove out, then insert them into a blender and mix. Then put the mass back in the freezer for ten minutes and the ice cream is ready, sweet and creamy. When you get sweeten, consider the following:
Splashing in the shade? No problem!
If the eczema is in a quiet phase, you can allow the child splashing in the paddling pool. Just remember to fill paddling pool with the mix of boiled water cooled to the room temperature with water in which you previously cooked whole oats seed (a handful of oats per liter of water). Why is that important? Tap water is chlorinated, and chlorine is not skin-friendly, and oats is a powerful grain that loves your skin. Staying in this liquid is healthy and beneficial, furthermore it will remove the feeling of tight skin and itching.
Do not forget to use the sun cream with the highest SPF. Sun has a negative effect on your children’s skin, and that negative impact is cumulative. This means that accumulates over time and that the consequences are growing stronger as time goes on.
Mom tells me the story about me!
How socialization of children with eczema can be difficult, our job as parents is that they easily accept that they are little different.
Access “I’m OK and You’re OK” produces great results. At the age of three, the child is too little to understand why the other children don’t want to play with him or to explain to them that atopic dermatitis just looks terrible. As the way for the acceptance of the circumstances of eczema, storytelling of fairy tales may be a great solution. Especially if the protagonists have similar problems. You can talk about a princess who couldn’t get asleep because of itching, and how her parents decided – the one who fall asleep would be expelled.
Or about a prince, which on itself had dots which helped him to camouflage and so avoid the evil wizard … How toddlers with eczema require more attention and care, it is certain that they will often be directed at you. Make sure that your children develop their imagination and enjoy reading and storytelling.
Try to make a small daily ritual of applying the cream for care. It will not always be easy because in acute phases of atopic dermatitis application cream baked and it is extremely unpleasant, but it will help to your child to pass through the difficult period that. La Roshe- Posay has some clever ideas.
Atopic dermatitis can be terrible and difficult. It is difficult, but it will pass. In over 80% of cases of atopic dermatitis goes to the fourth year of life.
But with the full four years, with formed the immune system and healthy nutritional habits, your little one will grow happily, probably without eczema.
Until then, you are not alone.
